February's Book of the Month is Visiting Langston by Willie Perdomo; illustrated by Bryan Collier. It will be read aloud in every classroom at 321. This is the story about a little girl who is excited to be visiting Langston Hughes' house in Harlem.  This  is a wonderful introduction to the world and poetry of Langston Hughes, who was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's and an American cultural hero.
The author is a Puerto Rican poet who grew up in East Harlem, a few blocks away from Langston Hughes' house. Brian Collier is an African American painter and children's book illustrator/writer.
Listen for a Langson Hughes poem over the loudspeaker after Family Friday on 2/8.

From the Principal

Winter 2010

Dear P.S. 321 Families,

January is Green and Healthy Month at PS 321.  We have lots of special activities planned!  Come look at our lobby displays and add your ideas for green and healthy choices to the mural that is on wall across from guidance office.  Each grade has its own "Book of the Month" for January, and the teachers will read aloud and discuss this "healthy choices" book.     Our science and physical education teachers will be teaching lessons related to this theme, and parent volunteers will be leading some special activities for lower grade classes.  The month will culminate in our popular "Green and Healthy Family Night," scheduled for Thursday, January 28, at 6:30 p.m.   During this fun-filled evening, you will have a chance to eat healthy food (including Stone Soup made by our third graders), exercise, and find out about different green and healthy projects.  One very exciting new initiative is a school garden, that will be built this spring.

Next time you are in the building, you should also take a look at the bulletin board by the guidance office, entitled "Celebrating Diversity at P.S. 321 and Around the Globe."

With wintry weather, I want to remind you to make sure that your children come to school dressed warmly with gloves and a hat.  If at all possible, the children go outside daily.  Please remind them that there is no picking up snow allowed in the yard--including before and after school.  Thanks!

Wishing you all the best for 2010!  I have no doubt that it will be another wonderful year for PS 321--thanks to the amazing collaboration  between parents, staff, and children.

Fondly,

Liz Phillips
