February's Book of the Month is Visiting Langston by Willie Perdomo; illustrated by Bryan Collier. It will be read aloud in every classroom at 321. This is the story about a little girl who is excited to be visiting Langston Hughes' house in Harlem. This is a wonderful introduction to the world and poetry of Langston Hughes, who was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's and an American cultural hero.
The author is a Puerto Rican poet who grew up in East Harlem, a few blocks away from Langston Hughes' house. Brian Collier is an African American painter and children's book illustrator/writer.
Listen for a Langson Hughes poem over the loudspeaker after Family Friday on 2/8.
